Couples Therapy
My Approach
Working with couples is similar to individual therapy, in that, we like to take a customized approach to each couple. Although some issues may be common amongst couples, we have learned that no two couples are exactly the same! Our goal as your couples therapist is to help you find a greater understanding between one another by examining your emotional experiences and unique narratives. We take a psychodynamic approach and pull from ACT, CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and positive psychology. We value the use of humor and authentic, relational connection in our work. We also use psychoeducation to help you understand the dynamics that may be causing problems in the relationship.
Specializations
We are experienced in treating communication issues and fostering an authentic connection between partners. We have specific training in military culture, family values, and LGBTQIA+ issues.
What to Expect
It's totally normal to feel a little nervous or anxious; especially if it's your first time in therapy! The first session, often called the intake session is all about gathering information. We will separate both partners out for about 10-15min and speak to each individually before bringing you back together for the second half of the hour. This helps me identify any safety concerns and get a feel for each person on their own. While we will focus on the relationship, we like to get a very clear picture of what your day to day looks like and some background information.
You may not feel 100% safe to disclose all your deep dark secrets and that's okay; it takes time to build a relationship together. No pressure to talk through anything you aren't ready for! We'll get there when we need to.
